Famous for its otherworldly jagged rock formations and largely treeless landscape, Badlands National Park offers a range of activities for everyone ranging from families with young children to seasoned outdoor adventurers. For an easy tour, take the Badlands Loop Road, which offers places to stop and see various major attractions in the popular northeastern portion of the park. The Ben Reifel Visitor Center is also located along this road and is packed with interesting exhibits on the park's natural and human history. Points further inside the park are harder to get to, requiring extensive hiking which means that few ever venture into the heart of the park. Two designated campgrounds offer some space for visitors, and backpackers can opt for backcountry camping during multi-day treks. Located in southwest South Dakota, the park is not far south of I-90, about 85 miles to the east of Rapid City.
Open daily year round.
Entry fee (7 day pass): Vehicles $15; Individuals $7.
